The Portland Metro region has the second highest percent of LGBT residents of any metropolitan area in the nation, according to a Gallup poll released this week.
About 5.5 percent of adults in the region identify as LGBT.
That’s a jump from 1990, when Portland ranked 11th and only 2.3 of every 1,000 households in the region identified as same-sex, according to Census data analyzed by The Williams Institute.
Lest you think the Castro days are really over: San Francisco has the highest percentage of residents who identify as LGBT at 6.2 percent. The California city came in at No. 1 in 1990, too.
Austin, New Orleans and Seattle round out the top five. Birmingham, Alabama, has the lowest percent of any metropolitan city.
The results are based on responses to the question, “Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?” — included in more than 374,000 Gallup Daily telephone interviews conducted between June 2012 and December 2014.
A 2013 Pew Research Center survey showed that just 12 percent of LGBT adults considered the levels of LGBT social acceptance in a city as a major factor in relocation decisions.
