San José, the vibrant capital of Costa Rica, has a rich history intertwined with the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights and culture in the country. Homosexuality was decriminalized in Costa Rica in 1971, marking a pivotal moment for the LGBTQ+ community. By 1987, organizations such as Las Entendidas emerged, aiming to establish a lesbian feminist presence in San José. 

Nightlife has played a significant role in fostering LGBTQ+ community and resistance in San José. Venues like La Avispa, a lesbian bar operating for over four decades under the stewardship of Ana Vega, have been instrumental in consolidating a local LGBTQ+ presence. 

In recent years, Costa Rica has made notable strides toward LGBTQ+ equality. In 2020, it became the first Central American nation to legalize same-sex marriage, reflecting a growing acceptance within society. San José hosts annual Pride events that attract thousands, showcasing the city’s vibrant and inclusive spirit. 

Today, San José boasts a variety of LGBTQ+ friendly establishments, including bars, clubs, saunas, and gay-owned bed-and-breakfasts, particularly in areas like Paseo Colón and La California.  The city’s welcoming atmosphere, combined with its progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, solidifies San José as a prominent destination for LGBTQ+ travelers seeking both cultural enrichment and community connection.
